Zohran Mamdani, a young Queens assemblyman and Democratic candidate for New York City mayor, has made a firm commitment: he will not cooperate with the immigration raids pushed by the Trump administration and will defend the migrants living in the Big Apple.
In a recent interview with CNN, Mamdani declared with conviction that he will stand firm and fight against the creation of “the largest deportation force in the history of the United States.”
At just 33 years old, Mamdani has become the first Muslim and openly socialist candidate who could govern the country’s largest and most diverse city. His victory in the Democratic primaries, where he defeated traditional figures like Andrew Cuomo, represents a shift toward policies that prioritize human dignity and social justice over the criminalization of migrants.
The candidate has criticized the current city administration led by Eric Adams, accusing it of cooperating with federal immigration forces and abandoning the historic sanctuary city policies that protected New York’s migrant residents.
Mamdani promises that under his leadership, the New York Police Department will not assist ICE in deportation operations, reaffirming that their role is to ensure public safety, not to pursue migrant families.
Beyond defending migrants, Mamdani proposes bold measures to tackle the social and economic crisis affecting New York. His promises include rent freezes, free public transportation, and universal access to childcare.

“I have many criticisms of capitalism. There must be a better distribution of wealth for all the children of God in this country,” he emphasized, highlighting the need to combat inequality and guarantee dignity for all residents.
The Trump administration has announced plans to intensify immigration raids in sanctuary cities like New York, increasing ICE presence and conducting mass workplace inspections, generating fear and uncertainty in migrant communities.
However, the response from progressive leaders like Mamdani represents a stronghold against these repressive policies, reaffirming a commitment to protect migrants and keep the city a safe haven.
Zohran Mamdani embodies hope for thousands of New Yorkers seeking leadership that defends their rights and fights structural injustice. His candidacy not only challenges Trump’s immigration policies but also opens the door to a city model based on solidarity, social justice, and inclusion. At a crucial moment, New York could choose a different path, one that prioritizes humanity over repression.
